Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of retreats are these?

Our masterclasses for fantasy creators take place at the coast of Portugal, in a small town called Ericeira. They are intended for creatives (artists, designers, writers, and directors) who have a heart in fantasy.

The all-inclusive retreat includes education, accommodation, meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), transfers and extra activities (such as surfing, wine tasting, or yoga).

What's NOT included in the price?

You are responsible for bringing your own materials which are specified by the teacher. This includes art materials like brushes, solvents, paper, and pencils.

You are responsible for all traveling costs and transport to the retreat location and back.

The price does not include a private room. The nature of our retreats is relaxed and sometimes room sharing (in very nice rooms, may we add) is required. We will take into consideration any special needs, but please be advised that we can’t ensure full privacy.

How do I get to the retreat?

We will provide a map and full details on how to get to the workshop after you've purchased the ticket. Lisbon is less than an hour's drive away from Ericeira and each student can choose a transportation method most suitable to themselves. The accommodation is within 10 minutes drive from Ericeira's bus station as well as great Uber/taxi availability.

If you are not flying to Lisbon, we will advise you personally about the most convenient and fascinating travel routes.

How do I apply and pay for the masterclass retreat?

To reserve a spot in a workshop, please complete the booking application online. A non-refundable deposit of 500 euros is due upon registration. We'll send you the bill after we've checked your application. The full balance of the workshop must be paid at least 10 weeks before the workshop's start date. For bookings made less than 10 weeks in advance of the start of the workshop, the full amount must be paid at the time of the booking.

The application form also gives us a chance to check if you have any special requests, are traveling with a non-participating partner, and ensure that you are comfortable with room sharing before signing up.

What if I need to cancel my booking?

The workshop fee is non-refundable unless the workshop is cancelled by the League of Fantastic Vagabonds. Please read our terms and conditions for the full details.

What if the masterclass retreat is cancelled?

This can happen in two cases: 1) If the teacher is unable to attend the masterclass. In this case we will cancel the masterclass and refund all students immediately. 2) If 8 weeks before the start of the workshop the workshop has fewer students booked than the minimum number specified. If this happens, you will be notified immediately and your payment will be refunded.

We do not refund any airplane or other cost of travel. We recommend you to consider travel insurance.

Can I bring a non-participating partner or friend with me?

Yes you can! You are welcome to bring with you a non-participating guest. Their ticket (an additional 550 euros) will include meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner), accommodation, and 20% vat. We'll help you with planning alternative activities for them during the lectures, but these extra activity costs are not included in their ticket price.

What kind of experience do I need to attend a masterclass retreat?

Our masterclasses are open to all levels of students, but some will be more specialized than others depending on the teacher. If you're not sure whether you're a good fit for a specific masterclass, please drop us an email and we'll be happy to answer your questions.

What should I bring with me?

You are responsible for bringing the required materials listed on the workshop page. A change of clothes, swimwear, and sun protection also wouldn’t hurt.

What will the food be like?

Our all-inclusive masterclasses include breakfast, lunch, and dinners. They are home cooked, organic, and made personally by our hosts with local ingredients. There will also be plenty of Portuguese wine.

If you have any allergies or dietary restrictions, please let us know in the application form and we will make sure to cater to your needs.

Will we be sightseeing?

We will provide you with activities that allow you to explore the beautiful Portuguese landscape, but as this is mainly an educational masterclass, it is not the main focus of the retreat.

If you wish to spend more time seeing the country before or after the masterclass retreat, we're happy to give you tips for additional travel locations.
